Look for us to post about our upcoming volunteer efforts with UNESCO, scheduled for August, September and November 2016. If you would like us to join and participate in your volunteer projects please get in touch with the details.
The Florida Trail Association (FTA) is a nonprofit volunteer organization based in Florida. Since 1966, the association has worked statewide to develop, maintain and protect hiking trails across the state, most notably the 1,300-mile Florida National Scenic Trail. The FTA also works in cooperation with the National Forests in Florida, the Federal management agency for the trail. The organization provides opportunities for the public to hike, volunteer and engage in outdoor recreation and environmental education. Get involved and volunteer.
XplorMor Team enjoys working with the FTA on trail maintenance projects and was delighted to provide photographs for the REI Community GeoStories (search “Florida” and click “Florida National Scenic Trail” to read more and watch the sideshow).
XplorMor Founder, Julia Thomsen, is honored to be a member of the Our Place Team. Our Place is an organization partnered with UNESCO to document cultural and natural locations around the world to promote preservation and create an archival record. The Team endeavors to capture the human dimension of a site as well as its important physical elements. The Our Place World Heritage Collection is considered the “first official World Heritage Photographic databank” by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
Everglades National Park, designated UNESCO World Heritage Site No. 76, was Julia’s first contribution to the Our Place collection. She is currently working on documenting several sites in Cuba and Panama.
